Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to question particular decisions from the official, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
