European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
